Donaghadee today
These days Donaghadee isn’t as busy as it was when it served as a main trading port 300 years ago. While it lacks the hustle and bustle of a main market town, it has gained a dignified serenity and tranquillity, allowing it to remember and maintain its past glory and character in a world that is prone to change and commercialisation.
Nestling comfortably on the County Down coast, Donaghadee can be found shortly after leaving Bangor on the coast road, and lies ahead of a wonderful coastal drive that takes in Millisle, Ballywalter, Portavogie and Portaferry along the famous and spectacular Ards Peninsula.
The Copeland Islands can be found just about a mile off the coast of Donaghadee, providing an important wildlife sanctuary for many diverse species of birds, as well as rabbits and seals. The three islands (Big Island, Light House Island and Mew Island) have been designated an Area of Special Scientific Interest.
Owned by the National Trust and home to the Copeland Bird Observatory, the islands can be visited by a public passenger boat that runs in the summer months and overnight stays can sometimes be arranged through the Bird Observatory.
Back in the town itself, Donaghadee is home to a wonderful collection of coffee shops, delis, antique shops and galleries – not to mention the many fine pubs and restaurants with which Grace Neill’s rubs shoulders. Further details of some of these can be found in our attractions section.
